The Teacher in Indian Philosophy

Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu,
Gururdevo Maheshwarah,
Gurushakshath Parabramha,
Tasmai shree gurave namah!

The Teacher is Brahma the Creator, he is also Vishnu the Sustainer, and The Lord Maheshwara, the Destroyer.

The Guru is the Supreme Omniscient One indeed, Salutations to the respectable Teacher.

In India, the teacher- the GURU has always been offered a special place.
He/She is considered next only to the Gods. This means that the student is always respectful to the teacher.
He/She seldom, if ever, questions the teacher.

It is normal for Indian students to take blessings from their teachers for any new enterprise that they
undertake - be it a wedding or a journey abroad. This, of course, puts a heavy responsibility on the teacher,
who not only has to be (nearly) omniscient, but also extremely upright and virtuous in all his doings!

Relax! Our faculty and the visiting resource personnel, by and large, are far more informal than the
traditional Indian teachers. They are open to questioning and discussions and don't expect you to be a
"traditional Indian student".

Faculty at the India Center are full-time as well as part-time and adjunct. They are available every weekday at
the Center during office hours. While among them, faculty cover various areas of interest and expertise, they
are aware that no one individual can be a specialist in many fields. For this reason the India Center makes
and maintains contacts with resource people in a variety of disciplines according to student interest and need,
and the availability of resource.

"The first day of classes- it was overwhelming and inspiring. It was great seeing and learning about these women and men and what they have chosen to do with their lives.. Every teacher here has something valuable to offer to us."
