Where can I get Information about The Global College?

For all administrative and financial queries, as well as admission procedures please contact our World
Headquarters - the Global College Brooklyn(718-780-4312) Or the Global College Admissions
Office (718-780-4326).

What is IC's Safety Policy?

  • Please be cautious and alert while traveling. Please don't get into trouble by involving yourselves
in any anti-social or illegal stuff. The IC will NOT BE in any way able to help you or would stand
responsible. This is especially important to note during the vacation, when the IC is closed.

  • Please carry your health insurance IDs and relevant papers with you while traveling.

  • Please look regularly into the Safety/Security Policy issued on the website by the US Consulate
    State Department.

  • TRAVEL PRECAUTIONS:
Students planning to travel to high altitudes, eg. Dharamsala, Lhasa, Nepal are strongly advised
to check that they are not susceptible to High Altitude Sickness. Please be aware that this can result
in very serious illness, even death.

  • Students planning on leisure-time activities, which are potentially dangerous, eg. rock climbing,
white water rafting etc., are warned that these activities will be undertaken at STUDENTS' OWN RISK.

  • DRUG WARNING:
The use of hallucinogenic and/or other illegal drugs is strictly forbidden by Indian law and by the Global
College and IC Community. Students are advised that they are subject to local laws. Neither the IC nor
the U.S. offices of Global College / LIU can be responsible for legal assistance or further support in such
a situation. Besides jeopardizing your own safety, please know that your participation in illegal
behavior can result in the closing of the IC by Indian authorities.

  • Students are absolutely prohibited from owning or driving a vehicle while enrolled at the IC, due to
    safety reasons.

What kind of a place is Bangalore?

Bangalore is a metropolis with all amenities. (You will not be required to sleep in the open under trees.
And a lot of people speak English).

How do I get there?

You can make your own travel arrangements
Students wanting to travel with others coming to South Asia are encouraged to contact the Global
College Admissions Office(718-780-4326) for information. Be sure to book and reconfirm all your flights that
lead you to Bangalore. It is not enough to confirm only the international part of your travel.

Also, make sure that open-ended tickets (those with no return date reserved) are valid for the length of
time that you plan to stay in India. Sometimes cheap tickets have to be used within four to six months;
check around before you buy!

What kind of visa do I need?

You can get a MULTIPLE-ENTRY STUDENT VISA THAT ALLOWS UP TO 12 MONTHS OF UNINTERRUPTED STAY.
Please check with the Indian Consulate and your travel agent/airline office for details regarding student
visa regulations. Again contact Global College Headquarters for details.

What must I certainly bring?

  • A valid passport - please renew before arriving in India if it is nearing expiry.

  • A valid health insurance policy.

  • Many branded medications that are available in the U.S. are not available in South Asia. It is
recommended that you bring with you such medication that you will need during the course of your stay.

  • An International Student ID that can be used for discounts on travel and accommodation in
international youth hostels. International Student ID cards are available from the Global Dir.Of
Academic and student affairs, at Global College Headquarters. Contact 718-780-4321 for more
    information.

  • 7 photographs for visas and other Indian government registration procedures.

What kind of health precautions do I need to take before traveling to South Asia?

Please get details from a health specialist who is experienced in treating overseas travelers. Please also
inquire with the Center for Disease Control (http://www.cdc.gov/) Bulletins published by the World
Health Organization are also useful sources of information.

What immunizations will I require?

It is important you get the proper immunizations and malaria prophylactics before coming to South Asia.
All immunizations given and prescribed medicines should be recorded in a World Health Organization
"yellow book" to be kept with your passport.

Students should check with their doctors about the following vaccinations/inoculations. We consider
them essential.

  • Gamma Globulin - once in 4 months, prevention against Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine - 3 doses
  • Malaria Prophylaxis
  • Typhoid vaccine
  • Cholera vaccine
  • Yellow fever vaccine

Please consult your doctor also about the following immunizations:

  • Measles*
  • Mumps*
  • Rubella*
  • Polio
  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Meningococcal Meningitis

Note: The "MMR" series is required to attend Long Island University. Failure to provide documentation will
result in registration blocks.

Where can I get information about safety and security for US Citizens?

For the latest security information, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Consular
Bureau's website at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement,
Travel Warnings and Public Announcements can be found.

Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S.,
or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-317-472-2328. These numbers
are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday (except
U.S. federal holidays).

When should I plan to reach India and the India Center?

It would be ideal to arrive here 2 to 3 days before the start of the semester. PLEASE INFORM US ABOUT THE
DATE AND TIME OF YOUR ARRIVAL WELL IN ADVANCE to help us be better prepared to receive you.

On arrival in India, at Bangalore Airport, you will be received by Center Personnel or a representative at
the airport. You will recognize this person by the India Center he/she will be holding. All new
students are put up in temporary accommodations for the first week.

How much money should I change, once I reach India?

Change only $20 to $25 into Indian rupees. At the current exchange rate (May 2006), a U.S. Dollar gets you
about Rs.42/- to Rs.45/- and some change. A cup of coffee costs about Rs.5/- and a local telephone call
Rs.2/-. (You can check on the latest currency exchange rates on the web: http://www.xe.net/ucc/full.shtml)

How much would it cost me to live in India?
  • Please check with Global College Headquarters for a current cost sheet/estimate of costs. Bear in mind
that the figures on the cost sheet are for one semester. Tuition fees and room and board costs are
paid directly to Long Island University.

  • You should carry funds for your personal expenses, books, and personal travel with you and have
them available when you arrive in Bangalore.

How can I have money sent to me?
  • Students can also use credit and debit Cards- Master/Visa cards to withdraw money from ATMs.

  • Students cannot open bank accounts in India.

Where will I stay?

All students arriving at the India Center for the first time
will be put up in moderately priced accommodations that
are both safe and comfortable, for the initial one week in
this region. (Payment of rent for this one weeks will be
deducted from the first Room and Board allocation, given
out by the India Center.)

After this week, the IC can direct those who need
it to addresses of room rental accommodations on file at the Center. You can check the accommodation out
before you move in.

Students may also look around and move into rentals of their own choice. In these cases, the Center will
not be responsible for safety and security.

What kind of food will I get to eat in the city?

Mineral water, Coke or Pepsi, and Pizzas and ice creams are available easily for money; so are clean hygienic
food and fruits (not from road side carts please) at decent supermarkets. Besides Indian food you will be
able to get a number of other foods from various parts of the world. Good clean Indian food is served
at the center, but students can opt to eat elsewhere.

What about drinking water?
  • Use only bottled water during the first couple of weeks here, not only for drinking but
also for brushing your teeth with.

  • The India Center buys bottled water used both for drinking and cooking. Students will
be able to fill their water cans or bottles at the Center after the first week or so.

  • Mineral water is sold at all super markets, railway and bus stations in 1 or 1½-litre
containers (cost per bottle about Rs.20/- approximately - less than 50 cents).

What about my Laptop/Computer?

Our electricity supply is AC (Alternating Current- please look it up). Electricity is 220-240 volts, so please
bring adapters and necessary extra gadgets for any electrical equipment you may need to bring.

We have found that most Indian software systems in Bangalore are compatible with IBM systems.

If you have to bring a MAC, please make sure you have suitable versions of software for all Windows
programs such as Microsoft Word and Adobe Illustrator as well as printer driver software for HP
printers- 640.5250 and 3820.

Software for Macs are not easily available in India or when they are available, are often very expensive.

What kind of luggage should I carry?
  • It is good to keep things to a minimum. We know from experience that students find a great many things
to buy to take back with them.

  • Students recommend backpacks and sturdy empty bags. Also money belts or waist pouches are a
    good idea.

Can I shop for clothes in India?
  • When people say you can shop for clothes in India- they mean Indian clothes and fabrics- not the
western kind. You can buy fabric locally and get it tailored inexpensively.

  • If you wish to buy clothes for people back home be sure to bring the measurements with you.

  • Do bring your favorite pair of pants.

Can we access E-mails? Would there be a charge for this?

Yes, we have 14 lines broadband internet connectivity at the Center. This includes four computers dedicated
for students use alone. There will be no charge for students registered with the Global College for
Internet usage.

What personal care products do I need to carry? Can I buy them in India?
  • Most cosmetics are available here. But if there is any particular brand you are used to or if you are
allergic in any way, please bring along your own brand.

  • Branded Mosquito and insect repellents that suit you. Mosquito nets and repellents are available at
    local shops.

  • Branded Sunscreen creams or lotions.

  • If your doctor has prescribed you medicine, please bring enough to last you throughout your stay here.
Be sure you have a copy of the prescription with you.

  • Please be sure to get your prescription for your glasses along (there are testing centers here too).
As for your contact lenses, we do have soft lens and daily wear lenses available, but again if your
curvature is not standard, please get a sizable supply.

If I am ill in India, what kind of medical care can I get?
  • Medical care in India is among the best in the world.

  • The local state of the art hospital with qualified staff is just a 10 minute walk away from our Center.

  • If you are unwell and inform the Center, we will get you an appointment with a qualified doctor.

I didn't know what I wanted to study in India........ All I knew when I came was that I wanted to be shocked to do something worth living for. What I didn't realize when I left for India was that in order to break free a lot of my previous ways of seeing the world, no matter how intelligent and open minded I considered myself when I left, I had to relearn who I am.
